First Mention of Yurga (1734)

1734 — the first line about Yurga in a document.

During the Second Kamchatka Expedition, student S. P. Krasheninnikov traveled along the Tom River, carefully recording all settlements.

He described villages, rivers, and the distances between them — and among them, the word “Yurga” appeared for the first time. It was still referring to the river, but from this moment, the name entered the history of Siberia.

More than two hundred years have passed — and the names around are almost the same. It’s a very rare feeling: reading lines from the XVIII century and recognizing your own land.
